Representative duties:

  • Performs specialized testing procedures appropriate to specialty in such areas as radiology, ophthalmology, and ultrasonography
  • Reviews patient’s chart, patient’s condition, and physician’s notes to plan and determine method of testing
  • Positions patients. Sets up, operates, and maintains equipment to conduct tests and procedures appropriate to specialty. Provides information to patients concerning specific tests and procedures

Required knowledge:

Example 1

General purpose:

  • Assist physicians of the Ophthalmology and Visual Science Department in performing diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems

Essential duties of position:

  • Perform preliminary screening examination for physician review including, but not limited to central and peripheral visual field tests; ocular motility tests; color vision tests; pharmacological pupil tests; tonometry, tonography and tensilon tonography tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation. Perform specialized testing procedures appropriate to specialty using both automated and manual equipment
  • Position patients. Review patient’s chart, patient’s condition, and physician’s notes to plan and determine method of testing. Set up, operate, and maintain equipment to conduct tests and procedures appropriate to specialty. Provide information to patients concerning specific tests and procedures. Record tests results. Identify and report abnormalities
  • Sterilize and set up instrument for ophthalmic surgical procedures; assist with minor office surgery. Calibrate and maintain instruments. Assist in the maintenance and repair of equipment. Order and maintain inventory of supplies. Clean and stock rooms as necessary. Coordinate processing of slides and film
  • Direct the flow of patients; arrange for laboratory and other tests; schedule surgeries. Assist in office procedures including scheduling patient appointments and processing billing paperwork
  • Instruct and act as a source of information on testing techniques, procedures, and equipment operations
  • Assist in research projects; organize project and the gathering/reporting of data; managing patient volume. Create visual aids for lecture presentations and publications

Education and training:

  • Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Ophthalmic assistant certification by JCAHPO
  • Knowledge of medical procedures, administering diagnostic tests, and specialized equipment and instruments

Example 2

General purpose:

Perform advanced MRI studies of human subjects including patients and volunteers. Manage the scanner and all aspects of the imaging procedures.

Essential duties of position:

  • Participate with clinicians and research staff in developing and implementing novel MRI paradigms and protocols
  • Independently perform advanced MR scans on human study subjects, using GE 1.5 and 3 Tesla scanners, in conjunction with research protocols developed by Yale investigators
  • Interview and screen prospective subjects to ensure MR eligibility, safety and compliance with specific protocols
  • Implement each specific protocol. Determine and select appropriate scanning planes and technical operating parameters, and assess image quality
  • Operate novel equipment for presenting stimuli to subjects in magnet. Record novel physiological responses and related data using specialized computer hardware and software
  • Archive MR images and patient data. Update and maintain the image databases and discs associated with the scanner
  • Serve as departmental contact for equipment service personnel to report and resolve equipment faults and provide appraisals of equipment performance

Experience and training:

  • Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • MRI experience
  • Experience with state of the art MRI technology in general
  • Demonstrated expertise in radiological positioning and MR image interpretation
  • Preferred: Connecticut RT licensure; MRI certification; expertise in operating GE Signa scanners in particular

General purpose:

As a member of the Radiology Department Team, assist in providing coordinated and compassionate care at every patient encounter.

Essential duties:

  • Perform specialized testing procedures appropriate to specialty in radiology
  • Set up, operate and maintain testing equipment
  • Process films and duplicate films
  • Instruct and act as a source of information on testing techniques, procedures and equipment operation
  • Assist patients when necessary to dress/undress for exams, or in transfers to/from wheel chair, stretcher, exam tables, etc.
  • Assist in radiology exams as directed by the radiologist
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Assist management in upgrading equipment
  • Assist in budget development
  • Act as liaison with repair personnel
  • Order and maintain inventory of supplies. Maintain disposal inventory per department protocol
  • Cover the clinical reception desk as needed
  • Perform additional functions related to clinical and clerical activities as needed
  • May cover ultrasonography appointments as needed

Experience and training:

  • Six years of related work experience in a clinical setting such as a hospital or large medical practice, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Connecticut State Radiographer licensure
  • X-Ray: Certification as a Registered X-Ray Technician by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists
  • Preferred: Ultrasonography: Registration as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.

Skills and abilities:
