Representative duties:

  • Oversees, instructs and coordinates the activities of Security Attendants
  • Monitors and arranges shift activities according to schedule requirements and staff availability. Establishes and coordinates work schedules and post coverage
  • Makes necessary changes to schedules in the event of unexpected absences. Reviews, coordinates and may authorize requests for time off and use of casual employees
  • Conducts inspections of various security posts to ensure on-duty Security Attendants are properly performing their assigned tasks
  • Maintains a security blotter of all activities and incidents occurring during the shift
  • Assists in the recommendation, development and implementation and enforcement of improvements to systems and procedures. Maintains close liaison with on-duty personnel at Yale Campus Police and Yale New Haven Hospital to assure on-going incidents receive a coordinated response
  • Serves as a principal source of information on rules and procedures governing security and parking operations
  • Provides relief for Security Attendants
  • Performs clerical functions incidental to security and parking activities

Required knowledge:

  • Specialized college-level coursework of Associate’s degree; detailed but narrow knowledge in one or several work-related areas; substantial knowledge of a broader field of learning
  • Working knowledge of University organizational policies and procedures generally; detailed knowledge of one or several narrow areas of University academic, administrative, or financial rules and procedures

Required skills:

  • Extracts and compiles a range of data from written sources, from individuals by asking questions, or from one or several given databases, limited interpretation of data
  • Classifies material for filing; uses a straightforward or complex filing system
  • Understands more complicated written instructions, memoranda, policy statements, etc.

Experience, education, and formal training:

  • Four years of related work experience, two years of general experience in security, law enforcement or military police and a high school level education; or two years related work experience and an Associate’s degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education

  • Coordinating and organizing other people’s work is a primary responsibility

Example 1

General purpose:

Assist in overseeing instructing and coordinating the activities of 10 full-time, 1 part-time and approximately 22 casual employees. In the absence of the Security Supervisor and the Assistant Security Supervisor, will have full responsibility for overseeing activities of the Security Office.

Essential duties:

  • When in charge, establish daily rotational schedule for guard staff and handle book-offs
  • Oversee the work of all employees. Insure that areas are being properly patrolled. Assist with the discipline of officers
  • Assist with training. Responsible for their full and complete control room training
  • Assist with the training of casual officers
  • Oversee overtime events. Arrange staffing for each position, monitor visitors, assist with catering staff and vendors and keep all paperwork related to the event. Responsible for all aspects of the event from start to finish
  • Ensure compliance with established rules and regulations. Assist in the recommendation, development and implementation of improvements to systems and procedures
  • Frequently check fire and security system for proper operation. Be able to troubleshoot security system and retrieve necessary information
  • Perform clerical duties incidental to security, i.e. logs and records
  • Operate and monitor control panels, alarms and related security equipment
  • Provide leadership in the event of an emergency
  • Assist with all aspects of running the Security Department

Education and experience:

  • Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education

Skills and abilities:

  • Good communication skills
  • Basic computer skills especially using Windows
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time

Example 2

General purpose:

Monitor and guide the work of the Medical School ‘s security officers; interpret and disseminate information to staff from Department management. Oversee daily work schedules of second shift security officers.

Essential duties of the position:

  • Responsible for interpretation and dissemination of information from department management
  • Responsible for daily work schedules of University Security Officers insuring all shifts are covered for vacation, personal, and sick days. Distribute and monitor work performed by shift Security Officers. Arrange for absentee coverage
  • Develop and conduct shift training for Security Officers and also coordinate on-going department training
  • Identify and report operational problems. Initiate corrective action and assist with diagnosis and correction of systems problems
  • Develop and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for department vehicles
  • Interact with Central Alarm Station Operator, University/non-University personnel, outside agencies (PD, Fire, etc.), and daily interaction/liaison with Security Management
  • Solve problems by choosing solutions from several alternatives that are not necessarily governed by established procedures
  • Perform Security-related clerical functions and administrative duties deemed necessary
  • Conduct inspections of various security posts to ensure on-duty Security Officers are properly performing their assigned tasks

Experience and training:

  • Four years in related work experience in security, law enforcement, or military police, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high school level education; or two or more years of related work experience and an Associate degree, or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Preferred: Broad knowledge of Yale University buildings and campus area and one year as a Security Officer I
