Required Knowledge:

Salary: B

General Purpose:
Under direct supervision of Cytology Supervisor, support patient registration team in all activities, including but not limited to, accessioning, registration, filing (slides, blocks, paper, etc.) and routine laboratory support functions.

Essential duties of position:
1. Perform accessioning of cytological/anatomic specimens in Pathology Information System to ensure all data in the system is correct.
2. Retrieve patient information in the YMG/YNHH systems to verify the consistency of information in both systems.
3. Prepare specimens, tissue, bodily fluid samples and other matter for analysis using standard laboratory techniques.
4. Stain, mount and label slides; prepare solutions and media.
5. Set up, operate and maintain laboratory equipment such as the autostainer and coverlipper.
6. Perform routine laboratory tests and procedures and record results.
7. May sort and mail patients reports so information is organized and readily available.
8. May file slides and track and maintain filing system.
9. Perform additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.

Experience and training:
1. Two years of related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
2. Preferred: Experience using clinical information systems, namely CoPath.

Skills and abilities:
1. Must have manual dexterity.
2. Knowledge of medical terminology.
3. Minimal keyboarding skills (25-39 wpm).
4. Ability to work with little supervision.

Clinical Technician (529)
Salary: B

General purpose:
Under limited supervision and with some knowledge of histological techniques, process and prepare high quality microscopic slides for medical diagnosis.

Essential duties:
1. Process microscopic slides at all phases, including, H&E staining, microtonomy, embedding, cover slipping, and
frozen sectioning to prepare specimens for diagnosis by Pathologists.
2. Recognize and identify the origin and type of tissue from any part of the body so tissue can be processed properly.
3. Cut and stain frozen sections or diagnostic surgical specimens using a cryostat microtome.
4. Assist in the Gross Room including grossing specimens and assuring each specimen is properly prepared for processing tissue.
5. Complete tissue intake, which includes properly labeling each specimen and assuring each specimen is properly prepared for processing.
6. Pick up specimens in various operating rooms and deliver to Surgical Pathology for processing.
7. File blocks and slides to ensure all cases can be found when needed.
8. Record laboratory data and graph the results to identify significant variations.
9. Type reports of laboratory information for review by the lab managers.
10. Maintain inventory and order supplies as need to keep the lab adequately stocked.
11. Follow all safety policies to clean the gross room and dispose of biohazardous waste.
12. Perform additional responsibilities incidental to Histology Laboratory activities.

Education and experience:
1. Two years related work experience and a high school level education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. PREFFERED: An Associate’s degree or two to three years in a related field. Experience with the CoPath system.

Skills and abilities:
1. Manual dexterity, ability to identify origin and type of body tissue.
2. Ability to work under pressure in a fast paced, clinical care laboratory.
3. Must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of staff.
4. Proven reliability and dependability.
5. Willingness to learn and seek HT certification.
