Performs routine biological, chemical and radiation surveys/sampling for exposure potential and regulatory compliance. Prepares and submits detailed reports to department managers for corrective action to be taken or maintenance to be performed. Follows-up to ensure proper action has been taken.

May assist in the mitigation of hazardous material incidents.

Oversees and instructs support staff.

Attends and participates in professional and committee meetings related to health and safety issues. Serves as a principal source of information on health and safety issues. Assists with the development and administration of programs, reports, and training and employee seminars.

Conducts research in the planning, development and organization of employee informational seminars. Presents portions of safety seminars.

General Purpose:
Provide technical support to the Environmental Services Section of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety primarily in the area of hazardous (chemical), biomedical and radioactive waste management, with the primary responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the
biomedical waste program. Assistance with environmental compliance programs will occasionally be necessary.

Essential Duties of the position:

Oversee and coordinate biomedical waste program. Identify and safely handle classes of biomedical waste. Collect and transport biomedical waste from generators to a storage area or treatment location. Train University personnel on proper packaging and documentation. Ensure proper packaging and arrange for waste disposal via a commercial vendor; includes chemotherapy and pathology-related waste.
Maintain waste paperwork and reporting. Autoclave and dispose of non-chemotherapy and pathology-related waste using onsite equipment. Follow OEHS standard operating procedures.

Schedule timely waste pick-ups and treatment. Ensure proper temperature and pressure performance of autoclave unit on a weekly basis. Ensure timely preventative maintenance for both autoclave and shredder units. With supervisor, evaluate handling of biomedical waste and operation of autoclave/shredder unit ensuring that proper technique and personal protective equipment is used.

Coordinate and provide oversight of other ESS technicians and contractor employees. Pick-up and process hazardous waste and radioactive waste from University laboratories and other University work areas according to standard operating procedures and all applicable local, state and federal requirements. Work with University lab community to set-up and maintain RCRA satellite accumulation areas. Provide oversight of RCRA 90-day storage areas.

Interact with laboratory personnel regarding the compliant collection and storage of hazardous waste. Provide specialized information to laboratory staff when necessary.

Assist other EHS personnel with packaging and transportation of waste from generation point to storage areas.
Perform radiation surveys and conduct inspection of OEHS-ESS radioactive waste storage facilities.

Develop awareness of principles regarding the decay and survey of radioactive materials. Survey decayed waste and dispose. Prepare and maintain documentation.

Prepare radioactive waste packages and documentation for off-site disposal.

Deliver supplies to laboratories and other areas as required.

Assist with environmental compliance programs and perform other functions as needed and identified by the section manager or supervisor in support of other OEHS programs.

Education and Experience:
