Tunes, repairs, and maintains University pianos and harpsichords. Sets instrument temperate.

Replaces pins, strings and keys.

Serves as a principle source of information on the purchase and maintenance of University pianos.

Communicates with vendors for parts and information. Monitors manufacturer guarantees.

Ensures proper playing condition of instruments.

Plans and schedules instrument repairs, tuning and maintenance.

Performs additional functions incidental to tuning activities.

Piano Technician (737)
Salary: D

General Purpose:
Maintain concert, studio, rehearsal hall, and practice room pianos for School of Music, and the Department of Music. Develop and institute a long-term plan for ongoing maintenance and replacement of pianos at the University.

Essential Duties of the Position:
1. Working with the faculty of the Yale School of Music, Department of Music, and Institute of Sacred Music, plan the maintenance, overhaul, moving, and replacement of music area pianos.
2. With one other full-time piano technician, tune and maintain all instruments. Some evenings and weekends will be required for special concert tunings.
3. Administrate budget provided for piano maintenance.
4. Tune and repair pianos located in colleges and other settings on campus.

Experience and Training:
1. Six years of related work experience, at least four of them in tuning, regulating, repairing and maintaining pianos for artist-level teaching and performance. Four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and a high-school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate’s degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of
experience and education.
2. Preferred: Use of computer systems including word processing, internet applications, database management, and spreadsheets.
