Grade E

Provide high-level research and technical support to investigators within designated facility/center.  Responsible for the day-to-day coordination and maintenance of assigned animal colonies.

Using specialized knowledge and experience in one or more areas of animal husbandry and technology, conduct husbandry, sanitation, maintenance, and other related activities for animals.  Follow established standard operating procedures, policies, protocols, and guidelines.

Establish and maintain breeding colonies for research, oftentimes involving highly valuable and potentially irreplaceable animals.  Establish and carry out strategic breeding plans.

Maintain detailed record keeping regarding animals and colonies, such as new breeders, births, weanings, deaths, etc.

Prepare reports and provide updates and ongoing communication with investigators and other co-workers regarding the status of animals, such as number of births, matings, etc.

Conduct or oversee procedures at the request of investigators such as blood collection, injections, and surgical procedures.  Follow identification procedures based on investigators’ needs (such as ear tagging, toe clipping, etc.).

Ensure that quality standards are maintained.

Coordinate outgoing shipments and incoming receipt of animals.  Order and arrange for delivery of genetic specific animals, as well as supplies and other materials.

Serve as liaison between with other units and departments.

Lead responsibilities, such as:
Administrative leadership of a unit or function, including overseeing and coordinating projects or work processes, and distributing and monitoring the work of at least 2 regular FTEs as a lead worker.

Responsibilities require high skills or unusual skills not typically required by others in the same job title.  For example:

Act as the designated expert regarding compliance with applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations, as well as University policies pertaining to the handling, welfare, care, and use of research animals.

Act as the designated Training Facilitator or Coordinator, responsible for ensuring that all incoming Technicians are trained thoroughly and completely in all aspects of the facility from animal husbandry to washroom techniques.
