C&T Scene: Reflecting on and expanding your job knowledge

In the C&T Performance Review form, Job Knowledge is a dimension defined as understanding the responsibilities and expectations required to do the job. With 2021 nearly behind us, perhaps now is a good time to pause a moment and reflect on your job knowledge and identify ways to expand your job knowledge going forward.

What is Job Knowledge?
Job knowledge includes work practices, policies, procedures, resources, laws, customer service, and technical information, as well as the relationship of work to the organization’s mission. Are there aspects of your job in which there is an opportunity for improvement?  Perhaps part of your job responsibility is scheduling meetings and you are new to the task. Is there an opportunity to enhance your job knowledge and critical thinking related to scheduling meetings?

Maybe you coordinate events and find a need to summarize data. Learning how to create pivot tables may enhance your job knowledge.

What are ways I can enhance my job knowledge?
Let’s look at two areas that will help you to improve as well as demonstrate job-relevant knowledge and critical thinking skills.

  • Model Office for Complex Scheduling is a class being offered as part of the C&T Training and Development program. This class presents an opportunity to learn or improve skills that are necessary to scheduling such Outlook meetings. Managers look for employees that are adept at problem-solving and who use critical thinking skills to allow quick and efficient scheduling of meetings. Through scenario-based experiential learning, you will explore and adopt critical thinking skills to problem solve when challenges present themselves.
  • Microsoft Office classes are available online through LinkedIn Learning. To help you select the class level most appropriate for you, complete a Microsoft Office self-assessment to determine what skill you are proficient in and what skill you want to enhance.
