Honoring Juneteenth

In May, President Salovey announced that Yale is adopting Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, as a university holiday. Starting this year, on June 20, the university will close for a day of commemoration for Juneteenth.

Below are some local events:

Join the YAAA on Tuesday, June 14 for a book club discussion of “On Juneteenth” by Annette Gordon-Reed. Register for this event to learn a historian’s view of the country’s long road to Juneteenth.

Join the Descendants of the CT 29th Colored Regiment for their annual   Juneteenth Festival, Saturday, June 18 from noon to 6:00 p.m. This fun event features family, education, and entertainment!

The CT 29th was the regiment of American Indian and Black soldiers, who were encamped in New Haven (at present day Criscuolo Park located on Chapel and James streets) who fought in the American Civil War.

Volunteers are needed to help with this wonderful event, if interested please contact Kelly Mero at ct29regiment@gmail.com
