New Job Family Redesign training available

April 11, 2024

Business Systems Analysts (BSAs) are the first job family role to receive newly designed training as part of the Job Family Redesign initiative. The training, recommended for BSAs level 1-5, represents the beginning of new training opportunities for all Yale IT staff.

Last spring, IT Learning & Development hosted focus groups and conducted a community-wide survey requesting feedback on what IT staff most wanted to see in a revised Learning & Development program. Training aligned with job descriptions for the new job family roles consistently ranked at the top of the list of needs.

Over the summer and fall, we identified Maryann Colonna, Interim Director of Advancement Technologies, as the subject matter expert for BSA training, who generously agreed to take ownership of the job family and work with us to develop a curriculum for levels 1-5 of that position. Drawing from the job descriptions and her expertise, Maryann crafted a thoughtful curriculum for each level. She worked with IT L&D to gather feedback from BSAs and staff who manage them to make sure the training outlined was interesting and relevant for the work they do at Yale.

Simultaneously, the implementation of Workday Learning provided an opportunity to deliver this curriculum in a programmatic, integrated, and engaging platform. With the launch of that system at the end of January, we are pleased to present staff with an easy way to access this training. Visit Workday Learning, navigate to the Learner app, select Browse Learning Content, and search for Job Family Training: Business Systems Analyst to access the curriculum by level.

In addition to the on-demand training in Workday Learning, users will also find in Workday and as part of the curriculum, instructor-led half-day sessions for BSA Level 1s and BSA Levels 2 & 3, which ideally would be taken before diving into the training provided online. We encourage all BSA Levels 1-3 to register in Workday and participate in training led by Maryann Colonna and Hannah Endri. These instructor-led sessions will be a vital part of the Job Family Role training for the BSA and help establish a community of practice among the many BSAs who perform this role in our organization.

Lastly, a new Teams site for IT Learning & Development is now available. It includes a channel for BSAs that will be frequently updated with event opportunities, BSA tips & tricks, and community discussion. The site will also include spreadsheets for training curricula and other ways your staff can apply their learning; these resources may be useful to managers with BSAs on their teams.

The work Maryann completed for the BSA role served as a pilot as IT L&D prepares to design and roll out Job Family Training for the other job families in the future. The job families up next include the Software Engineer, Project Manager, and User Experience Designer roles. Job Family Training is an ongoing, long-term project, and we are excited to share the launch of this initial training program.
