ITS pilots Skype for Business transition to Teams

December 10, 2020

Microsoft is retiring Skype for Business in July 2021. The University is moving to Microsoft Teams to support chat and online calling. ITS is piloting the transition, beginning today, Thursday, December 10, to be followed by other areas, by department, continuing through early Spring. Personal Skype accounts are not affected by this transition.

ITS staff who attempt to login to Skype, beginning today, Thursday, December 10, ITS staff will see a message appear redirecting them to Teams.

On Friday, December 11, Skype for Business will no longer be available for ITS staff. These individuals can use the Chat section within Teams to send and receive chats to other Skype for Business users who have not yet migrated to Teams.

ITS staff who recently transitioned to Teams, and others interested in trying the service will notice similar functionality to Skype:

  • The ability to chat 1-1 or with groups
  • Easy to use from a mobile device
  • Make calls from a chat
  • Ability to transfer calls
  • Distinctive ring tones

If you are still chatting with a Skype user, the Skype user must initiate the first chat to Teams and then chats flow easily between users.
