Fit for Purpose Computing initiative focuses on end-user computing needs

April 14, 2022

Summary

Yale Information Technology Services (ITS) has launched a Fit for Purpose Computing initiative focused on a better understanding of end-user computing needs and the purchasing and provisioning processes currently in use across the University. This initiative will capture the experiences of Yale personnel involved in computer purchasing and provisioning processes and then leverage that information to develop a managed desktop program.

  • FY22 Q4 focus will be on sharing information and gathering feedback from key stakeholders and the Distributed IT community on the current purchasing and provisioning process.
  • FY23 will focus on developing and piloting computer purchasing and provisioning solutions based on feedback.

Details

The Fit for Purpose Computing initiative will assess Yale’s current state computer purchasing and provisioning, and leverage that information in the development of a flexible managed desktop program that meets the diverse and evolving needs of the Yale community supported by ITS.

All Distributed Service Providers (DSPs) participated in a survey focused on provisioning practices during Q3 FY22. The information from this survey is being used to provide a starting point to gather feedback from the University business offices supported by ITS.

This initiative will rely on broad engagement with the support providers and user community in defining needs and providing feedback on solutions during development.

Key Goals include:

  • Providing a user-friendly computing experience to address specific unit needs and individual roles.
  • Increasing equipment and lifecycle reporting efficiency by ensuring visibility and accurate budget planning.
  • Reducing the time spent on provisioning and configuration, allowing resource focus to shift to high-value support needs.

Please watch for future ITS communications on the Fit for Purpose Computing initiative.
