Partnering to recover Computer Science’s network at AKW

July 13, 2023

On Saturday, June 24, at 7 a.m., a construction crew working on the third floor at Arthur K. Watson (AKW) on 51 Prospect Street accidentally damaged a sprinkler head. This caused water to cascade down to the networking closets on three floors, resulting in networking equipment failing.

In partnership with other teams, ITS worked through the weekend to assess and repair the damage. New equipment was gathered from a warehouse location and brought to the building. By Sunday afternoon, the network was back online, prior to the start of the workweek.

The efforts of several engineers and technicians in the field were highlighted: Phil Mondo, Mark Krawiecki, Antonio Valderrama, and Eddie Falcigno. David Highsmith, Tim Lee, and Leonard Welch. These individuals contributed to coordinating the recovery efforts as did members from other teams, including the AKW Building Manager, Facilities, Telecommunications, Data Center Systems, and Network Support.

SEAS Dean Jeff Brock and SEAS Director of Finance and Administration Erin Ethier sent their appreciation for ITS work, stating that “being back in business with minimal disruption to start the week is incredible.”
