Adhere to updated Institutional Standards of Conduct

September 14, 2023

With the start of the new academic year, it’s time to review and remind ourselves of our commitment as IT employees to the rules that guide the university and apply to both faculty and staff.

In May, the university’s “Standards of Business Conduct,” now named “Institutional Standards of Conduct,” was updated by the Office of the General Counsel. These updates stress the importance of maintaining ethical behavior at the university and clarify expectations in our workplace related to behavior and treatment, escalation procedures, conflict of interest, and commitment. This information is shared with all employees when they join the university and was reinforced last fall when President Salovey sent out a message affirming Yale’s culture of integrity and ethical conduct.

It has come to the leadership’s attention that some IT staffers may have conflicts or prior commitments that place the university at odds with its mission. We recognize that such actions may be unintended, and most employees abide by the highest standards of conduct, but the consequences nonetheless impact us all. All IT practitioners should realize that participating in non-Yale activities or financial interests may negatively impact and jeopardize the university. Therefore, we encourage all IT staff to review the revised document to better understand what is deemed acceptable conduct at Yale. If you need help, your manager can help fill the gaps. As always, the best way to determine if any conduct is a conflict is to disclose it and receive verification from the university.

All of us at Yale IT have a role to play in ensuring all dealings at the university remain above board and aspire to the highest standards of conduct. These guidelines protect us, clarify our expectations in the workplace, and set the standards for our working relationships with peers and colleagues. We want to remind you that these guidelines protect the entire Yale community, and any violations will be subject to disciplinary actions as outlined in the policies.

As you read the document, consider any actions or behaviors that come to mind. Remember that when you disclose potential or perceived misconduct, you can rely on the university for guidance. If you have observed incidents you fear may be a violation, there are many ways to speak up and share your concerns anonymously. You can submit this information online or call the university hotline at 1-877-360-YALE to report it. Several offices also address specific problems.

Remember that Yale counts on your vigilance and integrity to continue its mission to improve the world today and for future generations. Thank you for continuing to uphold your commitments to Yale IT, the university, and each other.
