Leadership consolidations bring new opportunities for Yale IT

November 9, 2023

We sat down with SLT members Jeremy Rosenberg and Frank Mathew, who spoke about their expanded roles as assistant vice presidents within ITS.

How have your roles shifted, and what do you hope to accomplish?

Jeremy Rosenberg: With John Barden taking on additional responsibilities, I was asked to lead Foundational Technology Services (FTS) in addition to my role as Chief Information Security Officer. This aligns with Lou Tiseo’s retirement this summer, which has been planned for some time, marking the end of his successful 15-year run at Yale.

The work of the FTS team is critical to the University’s operation, and my goal is to ensure a seamless transition from Lou to me. To this end, I have begun earnest meetings with the FTS Directors and am actively learning all about them and their teams.

Frank Mathew: This reorganization allows me to work more closely with support services, ITS internal operations (HR, Administrative, and Finance functions), external facing applications, and data and analytics groups. Though I realize that we will always have areas of improvement, I am grateful to have such an effective and outstanding team whose services are appreciated by faculty, staff, and students.

The change also allows me to discover even more meaningful ways to enable Yale’s mission. I will continue to work closely with my colleagues to play a broader role in influencing ITS operations and how the Yale community experiences IT services.

Is there anything you want people to know about this organizational change?

Jeremy RosenbergI will be methodical about our plans, preserve what’s working, and leverage any opportunities during the transition. I would like to hear from everyone within FTS and throughout the university to get a wide variety of perspectives as we chart a course forward for foundational technologies at Yale.

I have always seen my leadership role as clearing the way for the people in my organization to get their work done. I am looking forward to working hard to do that for FTS.

Frank Mathew: As an IT practitioner, seeing the CIO take responsibility for areas beyond technology is inspiring. Over the years, IT has transitioned from a service provider and a support function to an influential and strategic partner for the Yale organization. Our community should celebrate John’s elevation beyond IT and welcome him taking on an even more strategic role with the Operations unit of the university.
