This policy applies to all Electric Vehicle (“EV”) Drivers parking on University property.  The University provides Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (“EVCSs”) for use by EV Drivers as a secondary (i.e. not home/primary) source for charging their EVs.

EV Drivers must only utilize the EVCSs made available for use by Yale when charging their EV on University property.  EV Drivers must not utilize any other charging method (e.g., personally owned charging devices, extension cords, etc.) to charge their EVs while on University property.  Yale reserves the right to restrict the use of, make changes to, and eliminate EVCSs without notice.  Yale further reserves the right to charge and adjust user fees for the use of EVCSs.

Charging of EVs using methods other than the University-approved EVCSs increases the risk of electrical hazards and fire incidents, inefficiently utilizes electrical resources, and creates other potential safety hazards.  This policy outlines the appropriate charging methods for EVs in order to ensure safe practices and support sustainable transportation solutions.

Electric Vehicle (“EV”)

A vehicle fully or partially powered by an electric motor requiring a connection to an external power source to recharge the battery.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (“EVCSs”)

Yale-maintained charging stations equipped to support higher voltage charging while complying with relevant safety standards and regulations.

Electric Vehicle (“EV”) Driver

Any individual operating, or otherwise in control of, an EV while on University property. This includes, but is not limited to: faculty, staff, students, visitors, and contractors.

Designated EVCSs are located throughout Yale University property for the purpose of charging EVs (see Electric Vehicle Charging Stations).  EV Drivers must only utilize such Yale-provided EVCSs when charging their EV on University property.  EV drivers must not utilize any other charging method (e.g., personally owned charging devices, extension cords, etc.) to charge their EVs while on University property.  EV Drivers utilize EVCSs at their own risk and hold the University harmless for any damages that might result from use of the EVCSs.

EV Drivers must not damage or modify EVCSs in any way.  EV drivers must only use EVCS parking spaces when actively charging their EV.  Once an EV is fully charged, the EV Driver is expected to relocate their EV to a non-EVCS parking spot.  Yale Parking reserves the right to impose an additional charge for EVs that remain in an EVCS parking spot after charging is complete.

The University reserves the right to charge and adjust user fees for the use of EVCSs as well as for idle time when an EV is connected to an EVCS.  The University also reserves the right to unplug an EV at any time.  EV Drivers should notify Yale Parking of any observed problems with an EVCS.

EV Drivers are responsible for adhering to the rules and requirements generally applicable to the University’s parking program (e.g., enrolling in the parking program, displaying issued permits, etc.).  Details may be found through the Parking webpage.

Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary actions or other penalties, depending on the severity of the violation.  Repeated violations may lead to the loss of parking privileges, or other disciplinary measures.

Exceptions to this policy are extremely rare.  Any such exceptions, supported by special circumstances, require prior approval by Parking Services, in consultation with other offices of the University, as appropriate.

Electric Vehicle (“EV”) Drivers

• Responsible for adhering to the stated expectations and processes applicable to EV charging on University property.
• Responsible for only charging their EVs on University property using Yale-approved EVCSs.

Parking Services

• Responsible for the content and implementation of this policy.
• Responsible, in collaboration with other appropriate offices, for the enforcement of this policy.
• Responsible for the strategic planning for EVCSs on campus, including additions and removal of units.
