Trestle Tree Tobacco Cessation Program

TrestleTree offers a unique behavior-focused program to support becoming tobacco-free. This telephonic coaching approach allows participants to develop a trusting relationship with a Health Coach and develop an individualized plan for change. Coaching sessions follow a whole-person philosophy where participants work with a Health Coach to uniquely tailor the tobacco cessation program to each individual.

What Happens in Coaching?
During the first appointment, the Health Coach will learn more about each participant by discussing their previous attempts to quit. He or she will also help participants identify external influences on their health, such as family, work, social life, etc.  In subsequent appointments, participants work with their Health Coach to identify barriers to quitting, previous successes and current needs for their quit. The Health Coach may also give participants specific techniques and goals to work on between appointments. These appointments are not scripted, but are a conversation between participant and Health Coach where goals and appropriate steps to achieve these goals are jointly identified. Here’s what participants can expect from the tobacco cessation program:

  • The program is individualized to each participant.
  • Participants will explore ways to increase social support and ways to cope with triggers and cravings.
  • Participants will receive written materials that can help them develop a quit plan and stay tobacco free.
  • The aim is for this to be the last attempt at quitting.
  • Participants and their Health Coach will talk about ways to stay quit and not slip back into using tobacco.

Quitting Support

As part of a quit plan, participants may decide to use a nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) or other tobacco cessation prescription medication. Yale University offers both over-the-counter and prescription medications through their health plan. If participants choose to use these products, the participant and/or the Health Coach will consult with a TrestleTree pharmacist to help determine which tobacco cessation aid will work best for their unique situation.
