Meeting Notes for Managers, August 2023

Below is a summary of university-wide news and workplace information for you to reinforce with your teams during staff meetings or via email updates:

Save the date: September 30

Get ready for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Harmony Classic football game on Saturday, September 30, where the Yale Bulldogs take on the Morgan State Bears at the Yale Bowl. Yale employees, one guest, and children under 12 receive free general admission seating.

For over ten years, the Connecticut and Greater New Haven Chapters of the NAACP have hosted the Harmony Classic to inspire peace, fellowship, and harmony on campus. Yale joins the NAACP in its commitment to harmony and belonging.

Support team members’ PTO requests

Productivity and job satisfaction decrease when people work long hours or work for weeks without vacation or time away from work. Here’s how managers can create a supportive environment to accommodate employee’s requests for PTO throughout the year:

  • Encourage work-life balance, especially for staff who frequently tend to work beyond reasonable expectations. Discuss the impact of unhealthy work habits and how the benefits of taking time off can enhance overall well-being.
  • Be flexible in supporting your staff’s personal issues.

Reminder: M&P Max PTO extension expires September 30, 2023.

Encourage new Belonging events with your team
Share information with your team members about Latine Heritage Month and the Yale & Slavery Research Project and related events. This includes an event on September 14 honoring the Reverend James W. C. Pennington ’23 M.A.H. and the Reverend Alexander Crummell ’23 M.A.H. and commemorating the conferral of their M.A. privatim degrees. Additionally, consider promoting an opportunity for connection and “pet-itation” through Being Well’s “Doga” Yoga Practice, featuring Heidi, the Public Safety service dog, and others on Sept. 13.

In case you missed it

Last summer, Yale University Operations launched a collaborative set of multi-year strategic initiatives in support of the university’s mission. YourYale recently sat down with Jack Callahan, Jr., senior vice president for operations, to hear more about the operations strategy and these initiatives. This interview has been lightly edited and condensed.
