Welcoming a new cohort of interns

July 13, 2023

Yale IT recently welcomed a new cohort of twenty-two members to its Summer College Internship program. This is the 10th cohort group since the program’s inception in 2014. The program offers college students a paid opportunity to explore careers matching their academic and personal interests. The goal of the program is to offer college students a paid opportunity to explore careers matching their academic and personal interests. Interns and working professionals from various IT functions are matched to collaborate on projects and work side by side through the summer. Hands-on work experience, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, a necessity for college students in the IT field, can be developed during the IT internship program. Exposure to available career paths at Yale IT has resulted in many interns returning to work as full-time IT employees.

This year’s Cohort is fully immersed in the day-to-day ongoings at Yale IT. They’ve enjoyed campus tours, completed IT New Employee Orientation, attended departmental meetings,  heard presentations from departments within IT, and participated in career-building and training exercises. Next, they will attend workshops focused on resumes/cover letters, networking, and interviewing. Please welcome our interns, who are sitting together on the newly renovated 5th floor at Science Park, across from the new collaboration space and within their respective teams.

Here are thoughts from some of the interns and managers on their summer experiences.

Mohammad Atohmoshli (Software Engineer Intern) - I am thrilled to be part of the Yale ITS Summer Internship program and am gaining invaluable real-world experience. In addition to enhancing my technical skills, I collaborate with talented professionals and work on meaningful projects. Developing crucial professional skills such as problem-solving, communication, and teamwork, while being mentored by experienced IT professionals has been a highlight. The program has truly been a milestone towards my future career in the IT industry.

Sarah Beardsley (Service Management)- I was cautiously optimistic when our team received approval to hire a summer intern. For one, we had plenty of work to provide a potential candidate, but also because my team feels strongly about helping to mold and secure the early careers of our potential future workforce. Sean has exceeded our expectations in just a few short weeks. The program offers him a diverse view of life at Yale, and our goal is to incorporate him into all aspects of a functioning development and support team.

Vijayshree Erodula (Student Academic Support Systems) - It is great to have Suchitha, Sheel and Mohammad as summer interns in my team. We selected three interns this year because of their passion and curiosity to learn technology and software development. This is my fifth year participating, and I know the program is mutually beneficial for interns and their teams. It gives college students a unique chance to experience the professional world, equipping them with practical skills, industry knowledge and valuable connections to lead a successful career path. My interns are learning skills such as understanding functional requirements, tools to design, build and code pages, debug and troubleshoot and writing complex SQLs. My goal is for them to have fun, enjoy this professional learning journey, and potentially join the Yale IT force as full-time employees.

Glenn Hasiotis (Service Management) – My team has participated in the summer internship program for the last two years. I enjoy providing guidance and skill transfer on soft and hard skills. I focus on email etiquette, business requirements documentation, problem solving and finding the right balance between troubleshooting and asking for help. Equipping Rachel with new skills to further her career development is a priority for me.

Sean Lucibello (Service Management Intern) -The greatest aspect of my internship experience so far is the team (Service Management) I work with. They have created such a friendly and welcoming environment that allows me to voice any questions, concerns, or opinions I have on any topics discussed. I am so thankful for the opportunity to work closely with them.

Rachel Lacobelle (Service Management Intern)- I came into this program thinking I knew what to expect because I had previously participated in the Yale ITS internship program during the pandemic. However, my expectations were far exceeded. This year’s program feels more developed, engaging, and welcoming, and I am learning something new every day. I appreciate how this year has shown me a completely new side of the IT industry. It taught me about new services (ServiceNow) and about IT at Yale. I look forward to the rest of my summer here.

Suchitha Misra (Software Engineer Intern)- The Summer College Internship program has thus far been wonderful. I have had the chance to gain exposure and knowledge on SQL, dynamic forms, and testing. I look forward to learning more in the upcoming weeks! This internship has captured my interest as a Computer Science major. The intern events are also a great aspect of the program, specifically our lunch with John Barden. It was deeply informative, and we learned insights into his career path.

Sheel Patel (Software Engineer Intern)- Getting this internship opportunity as a software developer has been impactful. I applied skills from my academic life in real life settings. Learning SQL to create dynamic forms- a highlight for me- has given me the skills to manage and manipulate relational databases effectively. It also provided hands-on experience in developing interactive and customizable user interfaces for data input. I have faced challenges, improved my skillset, and strengthened my experience in different coding languages.
