Staff Accommodations Program

The staff accommodations program has transferred from the Office of Institutional Equity and Accessibility (OIEA) to Human Resources. Similar to the former process, staff will complete an online intake form. Next, under the new process, the intake form contents will be transmitted to The Standard, which administers our life, disability, and leaves of absence program. The Standard will handle the intake process, as well as collecting the appropriate medical documentation.

The human resources accommodations team will engage with you in the interactive process and make decisions regarding accommodations in partnership with your department, your provider, and you.

Employees of Yale in the category of “staff” or “staff fixed duration” (including: M&P, C&T, SM, Security and Police) are covered under this program. Individuals who are outside of this definition should seek support from the OIEA.

The Staff Accommodations program works to provide reasonable accommodations to a job or work environment that enables an individual with a disability to perform their job duties.

Employees with disabilities are eligible for this program.

Similar to our leaves of absence program, staff accommodations intake and paperwork flows through, The Standard.

Accommodations Request Form

Once The Standard has received the intake form, they will work with you to understand your needs and obtain the medical documentation required to engage with the Staff Accommodations program.

After you have submitted the intake form and The Standard has received your medical documentation, your case may be referred to Yale’s accommodations team. In some cases, such as equipment requests or leave requests, The Standard will continue to handle the case. In other situations, when requests are specific to a Yale policy, procedure or bargaining agreement, a Yale Accommodations Manager will reach out to you, your department manager, and HR Business Partner to facilitate what is referred to as the “interactive process” component of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA).

If you have a permanent disability, the goal is to fast track your claim through the process as quickly as possible, alleviating some, if not all, of the paperwork requirements.

The interactive process includes a discussion with everyone involved – you, the employee, to understand your needs and restrictions, and your manager and HR Business Partner, to assist in identifying what reasonable accommodations might be necessary.

An accommodations review depends on many variables:

  • The timeliness of provider documentation
  • The availabilities of you, your manager, and HR Business Partner
  • A review and discussion of accommodation options
