Message from Duane Lovello Regarding Arrests on May 1, 2024

May 5, 2024

To Members of the Yale Community,

This academic year has been particularly challenging for so many in our community as we face a time of pain and uncertainty in the world. As a group of professionals committed to protecting and serving the Yale community, the Yale Public Safety team has worked throughout this difficult year to honor the trust placed in us and maintain our model of community policing.

On May 2, when I began receiving reports of concern about the four arrests that took place the previous evening during a protest on and near campus, I immediately took steps to understand what occurred. I understand some members of our community have expressed deep upset about aspects of the arrests. I value all input and take seriously all reports regarding the conduct of Yale Public Safety personnel.

To ensure that concerns of the community are addressed fully and objectively, I have asked the university to appoint an external advisor to conduct a full review of the May 1 arrests. The university has engaged the law firm Day Pitney to conduct the review, led by former Connecticut Supreme Court Chief Justice Chase Rogers. They will complete their review expeditiously and thoroughly.

I am saddened whenever events that occur on our campus lead to arrests. I also take seriously the concerns of community members. Community confidence in Yale Public Safety is predicated on the trust of our community.

My commitment to the Yale community is firm. I will continue to work with you on the safety of our campus, and I will share with you what we learn from the review.

Sincerely,

Duane J. Lovello
Head of Public Safety
