Hosted by the IT Staff Development team, Yale’s IT Academy consists of a robust speaker series, recommended online training offerings, and learning events to support the professional growth and staff development of Yale’s IT community.
John opened the meeting by acknowledging that the semester was winding down, with the undergraduates having moved out and final exams concluding. Overall, he felt that the semester was successful, including the achievement of the university’s operational goals as well as a very low infection rate. IT staff contributed many advances to online learning, work from home initiatives, and supporting public health measures during this time.
At the start of the meeting, John noted that the on-campus phase of fall semester was nearly over, thereby reducing the demand for on-campus support services. He asked staff to “take a deep breath and give yourselves a big round of applause for successfully achieving what we set out to do: restoring the academic opportunity for the majority of our students, returning research to full productivity, and resuming all of our clinical operations.

Long Range Planning (LRP) Update
When John Barden joined the organization in 2017, the University was seeking a strategic model for IT services and support. In partnership with IT colleagues, the FY2018-2022 strategy was developed, with three “strategic anchors” driving this work: One IT at Yale, Service Quality, and Workplace of Choice.

Ensuring that staff feel safe while working and traveling between buildings at Science Park is a key priority for Yale—particularly CIO John Barden and CFO Steve Murphy who spearheaded, and recently received approval for, an updated public safety plan for Science Park. Preliminary work is underway, with the official roll-out scheduled for early February, at the start of the spring semester.
Last week’s IT Academy Speaker Series Café IT event on “Giving and Receiving Feedback” presented by Ted Hanss and Erika Fleck saw great success with roughly triple the average Speaker Series attendance numbers. The October 22 event was attended by 116 people across several Yale departments.

Time Tracking Update
Ron Lipkins announced that the Workday Time Tracking and Absence project, which was initiated to replace an outdated (MyTime) Kronos system, will launch in June 2021. The introduction of Workday Time Tracking and Absence will impact 13k employees, and will offer greater efficiency, effectiveness, and opportunities to continuously improve service delivery.
ITS wants all employees to receive meaningful performance feedback and coaching – during evaluations and on an ongoing basis. This is especially important in complex times when staff are balancing pandemic safety, remote work/life challenges, and the impact of hiring restrictions.
